Overview

For those who wish to experience the wild, the Manaslu trek is considered to be one of the best treks in the Nepal Himalaya. From the middle hills dominated by Hindu customs and culture to the uniquely different lifestyle of the Tibetan high-country dwellers, this trek takes us to the heart of the Nepal Himalaya, The name Manaslu is derived from the Sanskrit word manasa, which means “intellect” or “soul”. Soaring to 8,156 m above sea level, it is the eighth highest peak in the world, and is, probably, one of the most fascinatingly beautiful Himalayan peaks.

We, Cho Oyu Trekking group, begin the classic high trek around Manaslu from the historic town of Gorhka some six to seven hours’ drive from Kathmandu before trudging upward on switchbacks along the Budi Gandaki river valley through wild and virtually unexplored country to the upper reaches where trade with Tibet still continues as it has been for centuries.

After experiencing the rustic culture of the lowland villagers for the first few days of our trek, we then begin to get glimpses of captivating mountain vistas while passing along small and scattered hamlets before crossing Larkya La pass (5,150 m), the highest point on our trek. Although crossing the Larkya La is not too difficult, the Manaslu trek is tougher than most in Nepal as the walls of the Budi Gandaki are almost perpendicular at many places and the trail is rather rough and steep. Having crossed Larkya La, however, it is a series of gentle ascents and descents till we finally emerge at the Marshyangdi river valley along the main trail of the Annapurna circuit. Our trek concludes at Besisahar from where we drive back to Kathmandu.
